Arriving after dark: your first hour in a Homlee flat

A late flight or a delayed train is normal. Here is how to make the last stretch of the day easy, from the message you send before you land to the three things worth checking when you walk in.

Plenty of stays start late. Winter fog holds up flights into Delhi, trains run behind, and a dinner meeting runs over. None of that has to make arriving hard.

Before you set off

Send your arrival time on WhatsApp, and update it if it changes. It is the one message that matters most, because it tells the caretaker when to expect you.

Save the full address and the nearest landmark offline. Phone signal in a basement car park is not something to depend on.

When you walk in

  • Find the main switch and the water heater. A geyser usually needs a few minutes before the shower runs hot.
  • Connect to the wifi and check it works before you need it for a call.
  • Look round the kitchen. Knowing where the kettle and the mugs are is half of settling in.

If something is not right

Message us straight away rather than waiting for morning. A missing towel is a five-minute fix at ten at night, and an annoyance the next day. The caretaker is on call for exactly this.

Then get some sleep.
