Delhi to Rishikesh: train, road or both
There is no single best way up from Delhi. It depends on when you leave, how much you are carrying and whether you would rather read or watch the view.
By train
Morning trains from Delhi run north to Haridwar, and the last stretch to Rishikesh is about an hour by road. A few services go through to Rishikesh itself. The train is the calmer choice, and the one to pick if you want to arrive with energy left.
By road
Driving takes most of a day once you allow for traffic leaving the city. It suits a group with luggage, or anyone who wants to stop on the way. Leave early. The gap between a six o'clock start and a nine o'clock one is felt for the rest of the journey.
Or both
Plenty of travellers take the train up and a car back, or the other way round. You see the plains turn into hills at two different speeds.
Whichever you choose
- Send us your arrival time on WhatsApp, and update it from the platform or the road.
- Keep the address and a landmark saved offline. Signal can be patchy in the hills.
- Pack a warm layer. Rishikesh evenings are cooler than Delhi's for much of the year.
