Working from a homestay: what to check before you book

A week of work from a flat can beat a week in an office. A few questions before you book make sure the basics are there.

More trips now mix work and travel. A flat suits that well: a table that is yours, a kitchen for lunch, and a door you can close. It is still worth checking a few things first.

Questions worth asking

  • How fast is the wifi, and is there a backup if it drops?
  • Is there a proper table, and a chair you could sit on all day?
  • What happens in a power cut? Many homes in Delhi run an inverter, and it helps to know what it keeps on.
  • Which room is quietest during the day?

Ask on WhatsApp before you book. A clear answer now saves a scramble on the first morning.

Set up on day one

Run a test call before the first real one. Find the socket nearest the table and the spot where the signal is strongest. Ten minutes of this removes most of what can go wrong.

Keep the day separate

Work at the table, not on the bed, and step out at lunch. The neighbourhood is part of the reason to stay somewhere other than a hotel, so use it.
